For many years, life presented one challenge after another for Samuel “Sam” Mahapa, a 53-year-old man living with a disability from Meqhena Village in Mohale’s Hoek. Yet through resilience, community support, and Habitat for Humanity Lesotho’s Vulnerable Group Project, Samuel is now rebuilding his life with dignity and renewed hope.
Samuel married ‘Mathato Mahapa about 20 years ago, and together they welcomed two children, Thato (17) and Lefu (15). Life was not always easy, but the family managed to build a life together until a serious conflict led to the couple’s separation about ten years ago. Following the separation, Samuel moved to Maqhena Village to live with his mother.
Three years later, Samuel suffered another devastating loss when his mother passed away. Shortly afterwards, tragedy struck again. While crossing a river on his way to a neighbouring village, Samuel underestimated the force of the flowing water. He slipped and was swept downstream by the current, striking a rock before being rescued. The accident left him permanently paralysed, changing the course of his life forever.
As his mobility declined, so did his living conditions. The house he was occupying eventually collapsed during a heavy storm, leaving him without adequate shelter. With nowhere else to turn, compassionate members of the community came together to construct a small shack where he could at least find temporary refuge.
Recognizing Samuel’s vulnerability and urgent housing needs, community members nominated him as a beneficiary of Habitat for Humanity Lesotho’s Vulnerable Group Project. Their advocacy opened the door to a life-changing intervention.
Today, Samuel is the proud owner of a new two-roomed house that provides him with safety, comfort, and security. The support package also included an improved pit latrine, a 2,000-litre rainwater harvesting tank, and solar lighting, ensuring he has access to essential services that improve his quality of life and independence.
For Samuel, the new home is more than just a structure. It represents stability, dignity, and a fresh start after years of hardship and uncertainty. What was once a daily struggle for survival has been transformed into an opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment.
Samuel’s story is a testament to the power of community solidarity and the lasting impact of decent housing. Through the generosity of supporters and the commitment of local communities, Habitat for Humanity Lesotho continues to help vulnerable families like Samuel’s build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
“I never imagined that I would one day have a decent home again. This house has restored my hope and given me a place where I can live with dignity,” says Samuel.
Through a safe home and improved living conditions, Samuel can now look toward the future with confidence, knowing that he has a secure place to call home.
